The Rich Young Ruler
Parallel synoptics combined
The original written record of this account from which the synoptic writers translated and condensed their story probably looked like the first column.
Note. The four references below should line up horizontally. This usually works only on a full screen display. A narrow display will stagger the columns rendering the parallel effect indecipherable.
| Original "Q" Now as He was going out on the road, a certain ruler came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" So Yahshua said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." He said to Him, "Which ones?" Yahshua said, "You shall not murder,' 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself." And the young man answered and said, "Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?" So when Yahshua heard these things, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "If you want to be perfect, you still lack one thing. Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." But when the young man heard that saying, he became very sorrowful, and went away grieved, for he had great possessions. And when Yahshua saw that he became very sorrowful, He looked around and said to His disciples, "Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Yahshua answered again and said to then, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the Kingdom of God! And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God." And when His disciples heard it, they were astonished beyond measure, saying among themselves, "Who then can be saved?" But Yahshua looked at them and said to them, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God, all things are possible." |
